I largely agree that attendance should contribute to students’ overall assessment because it encourages active participation and helps develop responsibility.
One reason for my view is that attendance promotes student engagement in the learning process. Although textbooks and online materials provide valuable knowledge, classroom lessons offer opportunities for discussion, collaboration, and immediate feedback from lecturers. Students who regularly attend classes are more likely to understand complex concepts and participate in academic activities. As a result, rewarding attendance can motivate students to take a more active role in their education.
Another important reason is that attendance requirements help students develop discipline and accountability. University education is not solely about acquiring knowledge; it also prepares individuals for professional life. In most workplaces, employees are expected to arrive on time and fulfill their responsibilities consistently. Similarly, students who make the effort to attend lectures regularly demonstrate commitment to their studies. Therefore, allocating a small percentage of the final grade to attendance can encourage positive habits that are beneficial beyond university.
Admittedly, academic performance should remain the most important factor in assessment. Some students are capable of learning independently and may achieve excellent results despite attending fewer classes. Nevertheless, this concern can be addressed by ensuring that attendance accounts for only a modest proportion of the final grade, such as 5% or 10%, while examinations and assignments continue to carry the greatest weight.
In conclusion, I largely agree that attendance should contribute to university students’ final grades. This policy encourages engagement, fosters responsibility, and helps students develop habits that are valuable in both academic and professional settings.
