I’d like to talk about my monthly electricity bill when I was living in a rented room near my university. Although it wasn’t the largest expense I had, it was something I paid regularly and paid close attention to.
On average, my electricity bill ranged from about 300,000 to 500,000 Vietnamese dong per month, depending on the season. During the hotter months, the cost was significantly higher because I used an air conditioner almost every night. In contrast, the bill was much lower during cooler periods when I only needed a fan. The reason I had to pay this expense was quite straightforward. Like most students renting accommodation, I was responsible for covering my own utility costs. The landlord recorded the electricity meter at the beginning and end of each month, and the bill was calculated based on my actual consumption.
To keep the cost under control, I tried to develop some energy-saving habits. For example, I always turned off lights and electrical appliances when they were not in use. I also made an effort to use natural light during the daytime and avoided leaving my laptop plugged in unnecessarily. As for my feelings, I think paying an electricity bill taught me an important life lesson about financial responsibility. Before moving out, I rarely thought about how much energy I consumed. However, once I had to pay the bill myself, I became much more aware of my daily habits and learned how to manage my expenses more effectively.
Overall, although paying for electricity sometimes felt like a burden on a student’s budget, it helped me become more independent and financially conscious.
