On the one hand, mandatory remedial classes can help struggling students overcome academic difficulties. Many learners fall behind because they fail to understand fundamental concepts, which makes it increasingly difficult to keep up with the curriculum. Additional lessons provide opportunities for teachers to identify learning gaps and offer targeted instruction. Furthermore, compulsory attendance ensures that students receive the support they need rather than avoiding extra study due to a lack of motivation. As a result, they may improve both their confidence and academic outcomes. For example, many schools have successfully raised pass rates by requiring underperforming students to participate in after-school tutoring programs.
On the other hand, forcing students to attend extra classes may not always produce positive results. Academic success largely depends on a student’s willingness to learn, and compulsory programs can sometimes generate resentment rather than motivation. In addition, poor grades are not always caused by a lack of ability or effort. Some students may be dealing with personal, family, or health-related challenges that cannot be solved simply by increasing study hours. Instead of imposing additional classes, schools could offer flexible forms of support that address the underlying causes of academic difficulties.
In my opinion, although struggling students should receive every opportunity to improve, compulsory attendance is not necessarily the best solution. Educational institutions should provide high-quality remedial programs and actively encourage participation, while still respecting individual circumstances. This approach promotes responsibility and motivation while ensuring that students have access to the help they need.
In conclusion, requiring low-performing students to attend extra classes can provide valuable academic support and help close learning gaps. However, since motivation and personal circumstances play a crucial role in educational achievement, I believe additional classes should be encouraged rather than mandated.
