One of the most unforgettable trips I’ve ever had was a journey to Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. I visited Hanoi during my summer vacation about a year ago with three of my closest friends. We had been planning this trip for months because we all wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of our daily lives and experience the city’s unique combination of history, culture, food, and local lifestyle.
From the moment we arrived, Hanoi immediately left a lasting impression on me. Although it is a fast-paced city, it somehow manages to retain its old-world charm, which makes it completely different from many other modern cities. Everywhere we looked, there were tree-lined streets, elegant French colonial buildings, centuries-old temples, and tiny cafés hidden in quiet corners. The city perfectly strikes a balance between tradition and modernization.
One of the first places we visited was Hoàn Kiếm Lake, which is often considered the heart of Hanoi. Early in the morning, we decided to take a leisurely stroll around the lake. The atmosphere was incredibly peaceful. We saw elderly people doing tai chi, young people jogging, families taking photos, and musicians performing on the sidewalks. It really gave us a glimpse into the everyday lives of local residents.
The iconic Turtle Tower standing gracefully in the middle of the lake was even more beautiful than I had expected. We also crossed the famous The Húc Bridge, whose bright red color stood out against the green water and surrounding trees. The bridge led us to Ngọc Sơn Temple, where we learned about Vietnamese history and legends. Walking around this area really allowed me to immerse myself in Hanoi’s cultural heritage.
Later that day, we wandered through the legendary Old Quarter, which is undoubtedly one of the city’s must-see attractions. Instead of following a strict travel schedule, we simply decided to go with the flow and explore every narrow street that caught our attention.
Every street seemed to have its own unique character. Some specialized in handmade crafts, while others sold traditional souvenirs, silk products, or delicious street food. The colorful buildings, buzzing motorbikes, and friendly shopkeepers created an energetic atmosphere that was both exciting and authentic.
What impressed me the most was that despite the heavy traffic, the locals always seemed willing to lend us a helping hand whenever we looked confused. Several elderly residents even stopped to give us directions without us asking. Their kindness really made us feel welcome, and it completely changed my perception of big cities.
Another unforgettable destination was the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first national university. As someone who loves learning about history, I found this place absolutely fascinating. The peaceful gardens and ancient architecture created an atmosphere that encouraged visitors to slow down and appreciate the country’s long educational tradition. Walking through the temple complex made me realize how much Vietnamese people have always placed great importance on education. I spent quite a long time reading the historical information because I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s academic heritage.
The following day, we visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex, where thousands of visitors patiently lined up to pay their respects. Although the queue was quite long, everything was well organized. The solemn atmosphere made everyone remain quiet throughout the visit, which made the experience even more meaningful. We also spent an afternoon exploring the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Standing among centuries-old ruins really made me travel back in time. It was fascinating to imagine how kings, scholars, and soldiers once lived within those ancient walls.

IELTS Speaking – Hà Nội Incredible Food Scene
If there’s one thing Hanoi is truly famous for, it’s definitely its food. As a huge food lover, I couldn’t wait to sample the local cuisine.
The very first dish we tried was Phở Bò, and honestly, it completely lived up to the hype. The rich broth had obviously been slow-cooked for hours, creating an incredibly deep and comforting flavor. The tender beef, fresh herbs, and silky rice noodles blended together perfectly. I had eaten phở many times before in my hometown, but nothing could compare to enjoying an authentic bowl right in Hanoi. It tasted much fresher and more balanced than I had expected.
Another highlight was Bún Chả, which instantly became one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. The grilled pork was perfectly seasoned and had a slightly smoky flavor. Combined with fresh herbs, pickled vegetables, dipping sauce, and rice noodles, it created a perfect combination of flavors.
One evening, we decided to eat like the locals by sitting on tiny plastic stools beside the road. Although the restaurant looked incredibly simple, the food was absolutely amazing. That experience taught me that in Hanoi, some of the best-hidden gems aren’t luxury restaurants but humble street vendors. We also tried Bánh Mì, Chả Cá Lã Vọng, Bún Thang, Egg Coffee, and countless local snacks sold along the streets.
The famous Egg Coffee was probably the biggest surprise. I wasn’t sure whether I would enjoy it because the idea sounded unusual. However, after taking my first sip, I completely changed my mind. The creamy egg foam paired beautifully with the rich Vietnamese coffee, creating a drink that was both sweet and slightly bitter.
One of my favorite memories was wandering through the city’s famous night markets, where delicious aromas filled the air from every direction. We couldn’t resist stopping every few minutes to try another snack. Even though we were already full, we somehow always saved room for dessert. Every meal felt like a feast for the senses because the food not only tasted delicious but also looked incredibly colorful and smelled wonderful.

Besides the delicious food and famous landmarks, what truly won me over was the friendliness of the people. Almost everyone we met greeted us with genuine smiles. Even when there was a language barrier, people always tried their best to communicate with us using gestures or translation apps.
One afternoon, we accidentally got lost while searching for a famous café. Instead of simply pointing us in the right direction, a middle-aged woman actually walked with us for nearly ten minutes until we reached the place safely. That small act of kindness really touched my heart. It reminded me that genuine hospitality doesn’t require expensive gifts or luxurious services – it simply comes from people’s willingness to help strangers.
The staff members at restaurants were also incredibly patient. They happily introduced local specialties, recommended popular dishes, and explained how to enjoy them properly. Whenever we thanked them, they responded with warm smiles that made us feel right at home.

Hà Nội – My Personal Feelings
Looking back, this trip was much more than just a vacation. It gave me an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone, broaden my horizons, and gain first-hand experience of a city that I had previously only seen in books and on television.
Before visiting Hanoi, I assumed it would simply be another crowded metropolitan area. However, after spending several days there, I realized that the city has far more to offer than busy streets and traffic. It possesses a unique soul that can only be appreciated by slowing down and observing everyday life. Watching elderly couples practice tai chi by the lake at sunrise, listening to street musicians in the Old Quarter, sipping egg coffee while watching people pass by, and enjoying conversations with local residents all became memories that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
This journey also reminded me that traveling isn’t only about visiting famous tourist attractions or taking beautiful photos for social media. More importantly, it’s about making meaningful connections, embracing new experiences, and creating lifelong memories.
If I ever have another opportunity, I would absolutely jump at the chance to revisit Hanoi. There are still countless museums, historical sites, hidden cafés, traditional markets, and cultural experiences that I haven’t explored yet. Without any hesitation, I would highly recommend Hanoi to anyone who wants to experience authentic Vietnamese culture. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, delicious food, or simply meeting kind-hearted people, Hanoi truly has something for everyone.
To sum up, this journey wasn’t merely a sightseeing trip; it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that completely exceeded my expectations. It allowed me to create unforgettable memories, appreciate Vietnamese culture on a deeper level, and fall in love with one of the most charming cities I’ve ever visited.
