This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe the most appropriate approach depends on the reason for the student’s failure.
On the one hand, permitting students to resit the final examination is a practical and efficient solution. In many cases, a student’s poor performance may not accurately reflect their actual level of knowledge. Factors such as illness, stress, family problems, or exam anxiety can negatively affect results on a particular day. Requiring these students to repeat an entire semester would be unnecessarily time-consuming and costly. Furthermore, allowing a retake encourages students to focus on improving their weaknesses while avoiding delays to their academic progress. As a result, both students and educational institutions can use their resources more effectively.
On the other hand, supporters of mandatory course repetition argue that failing a subject often indicates serious gaps in understanding rather than merely poor exam performance. Simply passing a second examination may not guarantee that students have fully mastered the concepts and skills taught throughout the course. This concern is especially relevant in fields such as medicine, engineering, and education, where insufficient knowledge could have significant consequences in the future. By attending lectures again, completing assignments, and participating in discussions, students are given a valuable opportunity to strengthen their academic foundation and develop a more comprehensive understanding of the subject.
In my opinion, universities should adopt a balanced approach. Students who fail primarily because of exceptional circumstances should be allowed to retake the examination. However, if their failure results from consistently poor performance throughout the course, repeating the entire subject would be more beneficial. This policy would maintain academic standards while also recognising that not all failures occur for the same reasons.
In conclusion, although examination retakes offer a convenient solution for students who encounter temporary difficulties, repeating a course may be necessary when a lack of understanding is the root cause of failure. Therefore, I believe universities should evaluate each case individually and apply the most appropriate option accordingly.
